After years of photographing hepatica, I finally realized why some leaves may go red and others may not. Sunlight. This plant is atop a rock and there is no leaf cover to shade them, so we get red leaves and early blossoms. At least that's my operating theory. All the other plants nearby were covered in leaf litter and had green leaves. OM 90mm at f8 or so w/25mm extension tube. The bud itself is about 3mm long (2/8 inch).
