Searching in your own time
This barn is in the tiny town of Kempster and after I saw it once I knew I'd be back. The little scrim of sunlight was a bonus.
All left behind
Another ruin I've passed dozens of times without noticing it. When I did I went back and because it's in the middle of nowhere, stood on the double yellow line to shoot it. Soon it will be truly invisible.
The remove of time
Even though the bridge was fairly high, I had to stretch the tripod on its tip toes to get those great logs in the foregound. A little drama here on Ripley Creek.
Black River Gorge
The sandstone is a beautiful pinkish red through this section of the riverbed and downstream. Amazing color and texture where it isn't iced over. This is a handheld shot looking downstream.
Sandstone falls
Closer to Lake Superior, these falls were the only ones I could actually get down to. I was really glad for my spikes so I could walk on the icy sandstone shelves jutting into the flow. I think I need a set for my tripod, too!
I would not sign my heart away
Temperatures would melt this snow a couple hours after I climbed up a beaver dam to take this shot. I wouldn't have been the same without it so I'm glad I took the time when I did.
Unhidden pathway
Who can resist a shot like this? Even before leafbreak it looks pretty cool.
False rue anenome
The first few plants I saw had no buds open, but then further along I found some greeting the spring sunshine. OM 90mm at probably f4
Blood and rattlesnakes
Bloodroot was blooming all over when I walked the Plover River ice age trail. The light was a bit harsh with not much shade so I found little scenes that worked with that light. This is one of my favorites. OM 90mm at probably f5.6
Watching the watcher
I think I need a field guide to just dragonflies. I found this one emerging, quite late, by Ripley creek. Isn't it great how it climbed all the way to the top of this stick? OM 90mm at f5.6
Inflected by consciousness
There is another, much more enormous, tree over Ripley creek and I got onto the base of it for this shot upstream.
Spirited away
On the East Ridge Forest trail I was stopped in my tracks by a seciton of forest with a beautiful ground cover of small maples. It was very windy and made the branches overhead dance.
Best left
Another hoverfly on my mums has died. It makes for a great subject though. OM 90mm at f5.6 or so.
Too much or not enough
Columbus day weekend is usually a great time to get into the woods for fall photos and this year was no exception. A little twist of the polarizer brings up the color!
Ripley log fig. 2
Here's that log again, this time from the opposide bank. It's much easier to bushwhack through during this time of year because the leaves on the undergrowth have fallen and you can see where you're going.
